I can't find a file that I sent in a chat

Try the following steps: 

  1. Navigate to the user's profile with whom you're chatting.
  2. Scroll down to the shared content tabs.
  3. You can filter by file types. For example, you can select 'Media Gallery' to look through all the photos and videos shared in the chat.

If the other user was the one who sent the file, and they later deleted it, you will be unable to find it.
